HSL searched for a map provider with the open-source software model which uses open-data for building maps.
Support of open-source was a key value defined by the local government from ideological as well as practical reasons: such a system is provider independent and cannot disturb the operation of the system in case of unexpected issues like a price hike or company closure.
Their GIS team also cooperate with the local community on collecting geographical data, which ensures quick map update in case of any change in the real world.
Digital maps developed by the MapTiler team are used by HSL in the mobile app and on their websites.
Printed maps with the same design are used for showing information on bus, tram and train stops.
MapTiler maps display bilingual street names in areas where both Finnish and Swedish are official languages granting equal rights to both groups of citizens.
