<p><a href="https://2023.geocamp.es/">Geocamp ES</a> is a non-profit, free-to-attend, and self-financed national event. Organized by the international collective&nbsp;<a href="https://geoinquietos.org/">Geoinquietos</a>, it brings together communities made up of informal groups that meet to talk and learn about earth sciences, open geodata services, free software, and GIS applications, mainly around the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.osgeo.org/">OSGeo</a> community (Geospatial Spanish-speaking communities). This year, the conference celebrates its 8th edition and 10 years since the first one in 2013.</p><p>The GeoCamp is an&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unconference">Open Space/Unconference</a>: all participants take an active role in the execution of the event. This organizational format increases one-on-one interaction between attendees (rather than the traditional conference model of one-to-many communication).</p><p>The entire event is divided into several themes discussed in so-called Open Spaces. Here is a quick summary of the discussed topics, sorted thematically how they were discussed in each Open Space:</p><h2>Open Space 1: OSM (OpenStreetMap), Women Street names (Las calles de las Mujeres), participatory Geoportals</h2><p>The initial discussion centered around the project&nbsp;<a href="https://geochicasosm.github.io/lascallesdelasmujeres/">Las calles de las mujeres</a>, with&nbsp;<a href="https://geochicas.org/">GeochicasOSM</a> providing an overview of the project's current status, along with the technical and organizational challenges it faces.</p><p>Their project&nbsp;<a href="https://geochicasosm.github.io/lascallesdelasmujeres/">Las calles de las mujeres</a> is an example of effective communication and building relationships with external collaborators. The project combines&nbsp;<a href="https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/">OpenStreetMap</a> and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wikipedia.org/">Wikipedia</a> data to create a map that visually highlights the historical underrepresentation of women in society.</p><p>During the discussion, a similar project,&nbsp;<a href="http://mappingdiversity.eu/about/">mappingdiversity.eu</a>, was mentioned. It shares a common objective but takes a more contemporary approach by utilizing Wikidata for categorizing women's profiles.</p><h2>Open Space 2: JS and Web GL</h2><p>Currently, map libraries suffer from limitations in doing certain things (or at least doing them in an easy and intuitive way). These libraries need to evolve if they don’t want to be replaced. Will the new star be&nbsp;<a href="https://gitlab.com/IvanSanchez/gleo">GLeo</a>?</p><p>The demand for client-side raster manipulation is rising, with several existing solutions such as&nbsp;<a href="https://www.maptiler.com/weather/">MapTiler Weather</a>, GLeo, Mapbox, or Felt.</p><p>For newbies in web map development, it is difficult to select the right JavaScript mapping library: there is&nbsp;<a href="https://www.maptiler.com/sdk-javascript/">MapTiler SDK</a>, MapLibre, Leaflet, OpenLayers, and more.</p><p style="text-align:center;"><a class="btn btn-primary m-o5" href="https://docs.maptiler.com/sdk-js/">GET STARTED WITH MAPTILER SDK JS</a></p><h2>Open Space 3: Artificial Intelligence (AI) and maps</h2><p>The state of AI in geotechnology can be described in general as “experimental”. Better training of “the beast” is necessary to improve the results’ accuracy. There is still a long way to go to generate complex, quality maps with AI.</p><p>However, interesting projects are already underway: for example, extracting geographic data from a narrative and creating a corresponding map.</p><p>At the moment, artificial intelligence is extensively used for data processing, particularly in tasks such as shape and color recognition through pre-training. We can expect the development of specialized AI models designed for specific industries or domains in the future.</p><p><img src="https://media.maptiler.com/img/geocamp_es_conference_topics_schedule_3294c9a4d5.webp" alt="Grid of the most voted topics of the conference on post-it"></p><h2>Lunch and island trip</h2><p>During the event, we enjoyed spectacular food in huge quantities and in a luxury space. We even had a cortador de jamón (a ham cutting specialist) and a pulpeiro (a specialist octopus chef).</p><p><img src="https://media.maptiler.com/img/geocamp_es_conference_octopus_tapa_3895b97e84.webp" alt="Octopus dish, one of the various tapas served during the conference."></p><p>The visit to the island was very well conducted by a professional guide who must be thanked for his explanations and patience. We visited the entire island and the local museum, where we learned about the island’s history.</p><h2>Plenary talk by Carmen Torrecillas</h2><p><img src="https://media.maptiler.com/img/geocamp_es_conference_civio_plenary_talk_7abbeb865d.webp" alt="geocamp-es-conference-civio-plenary-talk.webp"></p><p>Once again,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/carmen-torrecillas/">Carmen</a>, an outsider, breaks our minds and shows us how to make incredible maps and visualizations. It is perfect for a plenary session at the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.jornadassiglibre.org/">Girona Free SIG Conference</a> or any other event.</p><p><a href="https://civio.es/">Civio</a> is doing a great job of transparency and surveillance of public powers. So don't hesitate and help them keep changing the rules.&nbsp;<a href="https://civio.es/socios/">Join Civio</a>!</p><h2>Open Space 5: Communities</h2><p>There was a shared concern as there would be nobody to take our place. We are failing to engage with the younger generations. Where do they move? Don't we know how to motivate them? If anyone has any clues, please let me know.</p><p>We also analyzed our shortcomings: there was no geo event since the pandemic (until this Geocamp), or it has not been very fruitful, we are not in contact with the universities, etc.</p><p>The experience in Barcelona with Geoinquiets and Geomob is that there are neither young people nor women. The attendee profile has evolved over time, now including more 'geomatics' outsiders who consume geospatial data and perform geospatial operations. However, the majority of them do not repeat attendance.</p><p>The QGIS Spain Association also demands a generational change that is necessary for the community and the projects to continue. Maintaining communities, associations, foundations, and organizations that generally support the development of free tools is essential for their existence.</p><p>The channels we use for sharing information about events are not the channels consumed by the people we are targeting. But what are the platforms where we can talk to them?</p><h2>Open Space 6: OGC and Blockchain Standards</h2><p>The discussion revolved around the significance of setting OGC standards to ensure uniform development in maps and cartographic tools. It was also discussed that the long discussions before reaching consensus causes delays in implementation.&nbsp;</p><p>The standard voting process has been corrected to prevent any private company from being able to manipulate it to obtain a majority of votes and make unilateral decisions.</p><h2>Snacks and breaks</h2><p><img src="https://media.maptiler.com/img/geocamp_es_conference_lunch_break_0797997823.webp" alt="GeoCamp ES attendees talking during lunch break"></p><p>The best things at conferences often happen outside of the main talks (pre-event, during breaks, and post-event).</p><p>Breaks are the best time for strengthening existing relationships and making new friends. People talk about various topics like manipulating a pixel on the GPU, monitoring cetaceans, cooperatives, Joomla (yes, it's still alive), but also non-GIS things like mountaineering, etc.</p><p>Having enough space and time between session to eat, drink, chat, and laugh is what makes this event really engaging.</p><h2>Conclusion: amazing event and what comes next</h2><p><img src="https://media.maptiler.com/img/geocamp_es_conference_conclusions_9f291703e2.webp" alt="Event organization team returning by boat from the island at the end of the event."></p><p>The Open Space format worked very well! Having people divided into even smaller groups might be even better for bigger participation, however, it worked pretty well even in groups of 20 people.&nbsp;</p><p>We really benefitted from pre-planning a series of topics to be discussed in the ‘open spaces’. Sending out forms to the attendees before the conference meant that we spent more time discussing them.&nbsp;</p><p>Well, that's Geocamp ES: create community, learn new things, and take home a hangover of knowledge and ideas. It was very gratifying to meet old friends and new people who did not know what Geocamp was and who found themselves with a truly amazing experience. They have been able to share knowledge in a participatory and relaxed environment, which really helps connect experienced people with beginners.</p><p>Once again, thanks to the organization. It's going to be hard to beat.</p><p>Where and when is the next one? There are already some proposals (Pamplona, A Coruña, ...), but we need to wait until next year to enjoy a meeting as special as this one.</p>

It is part of the <a href="https://github.com/maplibre" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">MapLibre GL ecosystem</a>.</p><p>To learn more about MapLibre check out the article <a href="/news/2021/01/mapbox-gl-open-source-fork/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">MapLibre: Mapbox GL open-source fork</a></p><h2>What is new in MapLibre 2 - 3D Maps &amp; TypeScript</h2><h2>3D Maps</h2><p>Every map feature works seamlessly with the new 3D terrain option: existing layer types are automatically adjusted and aligned with terrain, and markers clamp to the ground.</p><p>Now you can visualize the elevation of the terrain from a DEM (RGBA tiles) including drawing the tracks, labels, and points.</p><p>To render a 3D terrain, MapLibre creates a triangle mesh, a set of 3D triangles representing the surface. This mesh is created from the terrain data coming from the DEM (RGBA tiles).</p><p>By default, the maps are 2D, but you now have the ability to view your maps in 3D. To activate the 3D option, you have to add a “raster-dem” source that contains the terrain elevations (RGBA tiles) to the map.</p><pre><code class="language-javascript">map.addSource("some id", {

You will learn how to create your first 3D map.</p><h3>TypeScript</h3><p>The entire library has been rewritten into TypeScript.</p><p>The source code quality of the entire MapLibre GL JS has now improved. Thanks to types, developers have fixed several bugs and improved the tests which are now more robust. This makes the code easier to maintain and helps new developers contribute.</p><p>The best news for developers is that the deprecated code has been removed while everything remains compatible at the API level. There is no need for you to change anything if you use the MapLibre JavaScript APIs or existing bindings.</p><p>If you develop large applications in TypeScript yourself and compile them together with MapLibre - you can benefit from defined types present directly in the library - instead of external @types/maplibre-gl. In this case, you should upgrade your code. This approach can also bring benefits in code reduction via tree shaking in the future.</p><h3>Features and improvements</h3><ul><li>Add 3D terrain capabilities.</li><li>Now you can tilt the map over 60 degrees. Add support for unlocked pitch up to 85° (previously 60°). 60 is the default maximum value. If you want to use a higher value you must set the <code>maxPitch</code> property of the map. Example: <code>maxPitch: 85</code>.</li><li>Add option <code>viewport-glyph</code> to <code>text-rotation-alignment</code> which places glyphs along a linestring and rotates them to the x-axis of the viewport.</li><li>Default compact attribution to be open by default to comply with OpenStreetMap Attribution Guidelines.</li><li>Added <code>redraw</code> function to map.</li><li>Cancel pending GeoJSON requests when <code>GeoJSONSource.setData()</code> is called instead of waiting for any pending request to complete before issuing the request for the new URL.</li></ul><h3>Breaking changes</h3><ul><li>Migration to Typescript (some typescript typings have changed).</li><li>Removed all code related to <code>accessToken</code> and Mapbox specific URLs starting with <code>mapbox://</code>. Telemetry and tracking code were removed.</li><li>Removed <code>baseApiUrl</code> as it was used only for Mapbox related URLs.</li><li>Removed <code>version</code> from the public API</li><li>Deprecated Internet Explorer is no longer supported from this release.</li><li>Stopped supporting Chrome 49-65. Chrome 66+ is now required. <p>One of the main challenges while working with GIS is the publication of maps and data on the internet. With the MapTiler Cloud API, you can automate these tasks from the terminal without using a browser.&nbsp;</p><p style="text-align:center;"><a class="btn btn-primary m-o5" href="https://cloud.maptiler.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">START NOW FOR FREE</a></p><h2>New MapTiler Cloud Admin API</h2><p>We have developed a new Admin API that allows you to change the metadata of already created tiles, add new ones, update or delete them. The API specification for it is located on <a href="https://docs.maptiler.com/cloud/admin-api/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">MapTiler API Documentation Page</a>.</p><h2>API Authorization</h2><p>Together with the admin API we have created the <strong>Service Credentials</strong>, a new way of authentication to sign the requests made to the API. While API Keys are used to accessing your maps, tiles, and data from your applications` frontend. The credentials are used to access the administration API. To make your life easier, we have also created a CLI utility to upload the tilesets.</p><p>The new admin API base URL is <a href="https://service.maptiler.com/v1" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><strong>https://service.maptiler.com/v1</strong></a></p><p>Doing the whole process manually via curl involves making multiple API calls. For example, calling the Admin API to start the ingest. The Admin API returns a Google Drive URL to upload the file. He strongly believes in the open movement, whether software, data, or knowledge. That is why he is a member of the Spanish OSGeo community and OpenStreetMap. He has more than 15 years of experience developing web applications with maps for several projects at the Cartographic and Geological Institute of Catalonia and startups. He is also an associate professor at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, teaching subjects related to web mapping in the Masters of Geoinformation.
