Dark mode OpenStreetMap style

The classic OpenStreetMap style is a staple of the mapping world: familiar, detailed, and trusted by millions. Today, we are bringing this beloved community style into a new era with the launch of OpenStreetMap Dark.

This isn't a simple color inversion; the entire palette is redesigned to ensure that the familiar aesthetics remain recognisable, even at night. Our new dark version builds on our heritage as contributors to OpenMapTiles and the recent milestone of the MapTiler OMT style being featured on OpenStreetMap.org.

Maps optimized for eye comfort and clarity

Designing a dark map requires a focus on readability and contrast.

  • Designed for clarity: A new set of high-contrast icons and map patterns is optimized for dark mode, making every detail easy to recognize.
  • Refined color and typography: We updated our color scheme and contrast ratios to keep text sharp and easy to read at night, preventing eye strain.
  • Seamless switching: Enable your application to switch between light and dark modes automatically based on the user's system settings or the time of the day using MapTiler SDK.
