A New Map of Japan

MapTiler's Japan map style with data from GSI and MapTiler Planet

Japan has highly specific mapping conventions, so we built a Japan-first cartographic experience for Japanese users. The maps use a unique blend of Japan’s official GSI data and our premium MapTiler Planet-v4 dataset. This has enabled us to preserve the local symbols, naming conventions, and feature semantics familiar to the people of Japan, while presenting them in a clean, modern, and readable design.

Here are the key benefits of using MapTiler's map of Japan:

  • Built with Official GSI Data blended with premium MapTiler Planet
  • Pre-made dark mode maps, ready for use, and fully customizable cartography
  • Vector tiles for fast loading and smooth rendering of Japanese characters

Japanese users get a map in their language that looks and behaves like the maps they know, with the usability of a modern map editor inside the MapTiler platform. The map is fully customizable, allowing users to adapt colors, icons, and visual hierarchy to match their brand or use case. It includes a carefully designed dark mode, and all other changes available in our other map styles are accessible via the Map Designer.

Our new map of Japan is built on lightweight vector tiles, enabling smooth rendering of the Japanese writing system (including vertical text labels!) and crisp detail at every zoom level while minimizing data transfer. It is optimized for high-performance web and mobile applications, ensuring a seamless user experience.

Japanese development teams or international companies running business in Japan can build multiple map experiences from a single map style, tailored to different audiences, contexts, or devices.

The Japan map style is also available for use with MapTiler On-Prem, enabling full offline use. This makes it ideal for air-gapped, secure environments and sovereign map infrastructures where security is paramount, and for devices, equipment, and vehicles that are taken into the field away from internet connectivity.
